Step-by-step guide to product certification
At NSS Labs, we are committed to operating an open, efficient, and scientifically repeatable certification process. Our rigorous, but fair criteria and methodology ensure we maintain the independence, thoroughness, and integrity that the readers of our reports have come to value.
Planning Phase
- Vendor reviews available certification programs, and consults with client services as needed
- Vendor and NSS Labs agree to functional test, performance level and environment
- Client signs and returns contract and provides purchase order
- NSS Labs and vendors schedule lab time
- Payment is due in full no later than 30 days prior to start of testing.
- Vendor delivers product to be tested to NSS Labs’ facility one week prior to testing.
Pre-Test Phase
- On scheduled test date, vendor and NSS Labs personnel setup product and configure lab environment
- Basic sub-set of main tests is performed with vendor staff on-site to verify the product under test (PUT) is configured and installed correctly, and that there are no major issues.
- If the product fails these initial tests and it is determined that the PUT is at fault, the client is given the option to continue with standard certification testing in order to obtain full report (albeit a “NSS Tested”) or switch to custom testing for the remainder of the test slot to determine the cause of the problem. Additional fees may apply.
Test Phase
- Comprehensive product functionality and performance testing is conducted. This is the longest phase of the process, and can last between two to four weeks on average. During this time, vendor personnel is not permitted in the lab.
- All results are captured and recorded in a secure environment, so they can be reproduced as needed.
Post-Test Phase
- Scientific analysis of test suite results is conducted and the final report is produced (note: this can take up to two weeks depending on the complexity of the test
- NSS Labs determines pass/fail status based on results. Vendor products which pass are awarded a certification level.
- The vendor is notified of the results
- If the vendor's product fails, remediation and retesting is required (at an additional cost)
- Results are posted in the global product certification database on the www.NSSLabs.com website
- Vendor receives the right to utilize the report and awarded logos and participate in joint PR activities
- Additional co-marketing may be available, contact NSS Labs for details (e.g. webcasts, case studies, quotes, etc.)
