Leading firewall products are continuing to fail to inspect encrypted network traffic and block malware during security evaluations, according to cybersecurity product assessment firm CyberRatings.org, which compares services in a new report of several cloud-based products including offerings from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft.
“This report compares nine cloud network firewalls across security effectiveness, false-positive management, TLS support, performance, and cost of the tested configuration,” CyberRatings says in a Sept. 29 report.
CyberRatings is a nonprofit organization that performs independent evaluations of cybersecurity products through their testing firm NSS Labs. CyberRatings evaluated nine popular firewall products through testing their routing and access control, handling of encrypted traffic, exploits, evasion techniques, false positives, performance metrics and stability and reliability.
The AWS Network Firewall and Microsoft Azure Firewall products both received a zero percent rating for security effectiveness, resulting in a “Caution” rating, according to the report. Cloud environments from AWS and Azure are most frequently used by federal agencies as part of daily operations.
