The shift towards feature consolidation and away from the traditional defense-in-depth strategy introduces challenges for customers. Enterprises may need to purchase products with features that overlap with pre-existing best-of-breed product suites, and a consolidated product with features that are rushed to market may fail to deliver on its advertised capabilities. Inadvertently, an organization’s desire for simplicity may instead lead to an increase in the total cost of ownership (TCO), an increase in overall complexity, and a reduction in security. This analyst brief discusses the challenges of feature consolidation.
