The scope of “bring your own device” (BYOD) initiatives tends to broaden rapidly once a project is underway. What starts off with a defined focus (e.g., iPad rollout), often rapidly turns into wholesale consumerization of IT, with laptops, smartphones and tablets all becoming connected to the corporate network. Each of these devices requires support for myriad corporate applications, including legacy applications. If granted, this can have major cost implications. Recent BYOD initiatives generally incorporate both mobile device management (MDM) for smartphones and tablets, and provisioning of user-owned laptops. BYOD laptops carry greater risk, but are rapidly forcing their way into the enterprise.
